Trying to unlock Iphone 4

I have went through a painful, but patience building process these past 2 months in buying myself an IPhone 4. Due to the fact that I'm on Tmobile, I intend to jailbreak and unlock it for my personal use. At this time I've done this to an Iphone 3GS running IOS 5.1 and Baseband 6.15 with Ultrasnow.
It took me this long because I bought the first one on Ebay with the description that the phone was in 'mint condition'. When I received it I found it to have some scratches as well as the home button was sticking. We boxed it immediately and contacted the seller, but she refused to respond. 3 days later we submitted a claim to Ebay's Buyer Protection plan, she finally responded by saying, 'it is mint, but I have had it since it came out so it will be used...' Uh yah, that does not qualify it as mint condition in my book. Through my wife's persistance with PayPal, they authorized us for a full refund if we would ship back the product with signature capture. We did so but the phone as far as I know has not been picked up.
After receiving the refund, my wife started the search for another GSM capable Iphone4 on Ebay. She won an auction for an AT&T model an Iphone 4 32GB version. This one was not advertised as mint condition, but it's in fantastic shape.
I then got online and found the directions to do the Sam Prefs unlock process. I jailbroke and added the repo.bingner.com and ran through many different permutations of the process but no go. Finally as I was Googling I realized that this hack has been blocked by Apple servers so we Iphone users are unable to unlock our carrier.
I decided to try one of the unlock services online for $20 but found this to be a scam. After I paid through PayPal (highly recommended for any online purchases) I was sent to a web page with some directions for jailbreaking and setting up Ultrasnow. They hadn't done their research all newer models of Iphone 4 with baseband 4.12.01 are not capable of this unlock. We are waiting on a full refund as well. So back to the drawing board.
My last option, if I want to stay on Tmobile is to find someone who has an AT&T subscription but out of contract. I was able to convince my friend to contact them and request a unlock. But he won't be out of contract until next week. I hope to get the unlock and then I'll post my update. I would still like to do a jailbroken unlock and add those instructions when that is available in the future. Does anyone have any other steps that would work to unlock their Iphone 4??

So my friend contacted AT&T and due to his account being in good standing and out of contract AT&T sent him the confirmation email. The next day we followed the instructions to do a back up and restore in Itunes using his account, but we did not get the "Congratulations, Your Iphone has been unlocked message". He took the phone home that night and did a full backup and restore in Itunes once again, (just a note we were required to have a valid Sim (AT&T) to do the restore). Once again we did not get the message. I was fairly bummed out since this situation has been ongoing for the last month and a half. Later that afternoon he received a message from AT&T support saying that they noticed that we had tried to unlock and they had received an error, they told him to reconnect to his Itunes once again. He did this and as soon as Itunes recognized the phone, we got the popup confirmation! I drove over to my local T-Mobile store and had them activate a new micro sim, popped it in, and I had service immediately. I also used Redsn0w 0.9.14b1 and now have an untethered jailbroke, factory unlocked iPhone. Please leave your story in the comments section, and good luck.
